Lisa Guyer, Housing Security Coordinator, works in low-income communities to assist residents with any obstacles they may face. Each month, Lisa provides a newsletter with information and helpful programs for the neighbors. One month, she focused on scams, which became very relevant for Merideth, a resident who struggles with mental health issues.
Merideth had begun talking online to someone she thought was interested in a relationship with her. However, once she started to trust this person, they started to ask her for money. After sending money, she realized she had fallen for a scam, like one of the ones that Lisa had shared in her monthly newsletter.
Merideth decided to consult with Lisa to get some assistance. Lisa helped her set up a budget to ensure that she could afford to pay all of her bills each month, including her rent, payments on her furniture, and more. Merideth has been meeting with Lisa consistently to check in and update Lisa on how she is doing.
Lisa says, “Within 5 minutes of showing up to my office, Merideth is there to talk with me about her progress on her finances.” She even helped Lisa decorate her office for the holidays. This allows Merideth to get some socialization, something that she was lacking before she moved into her current housing community. Lisa also helps reassure Merideth when she is hyper-fixated on certain issues.
Lisa hosts monthly programs and events for residents to get advice, resources, and a chance to connect with others, and Merideth consistently shows up to these programs! Stories like Merideth's are why Lisa does what she does. She says that she “loves what she does, being there for the residents, and being a part of a team that is there for people in their times of need.” We look forward to seeing how Merideth continues on her journey to self-sufficiency.
