A year ago, we learned about Alyssa’s journey with Kory Arnold, our Self-Sufficiency Manager, who was able to help her find housing when she and her three children were living in a homeless shelter. Since this time, she has continued her work with Kory and also began working with a Family Development Coordinator, Alissa Patterson.
There have been many obstacles that Alyssa has faced in the past year. The biggest was finding housing before her temporary housing ran out. She struggled to find a job that would work with her daycare schedule. She had to move in with a friend once her housing ran out.
With Kory's guidance, Alyssa was able to find a job that pays her enough to support her children, which gave her a better chance to secure housing. Just last month, Alyssa was approved for a new apartment and moved in with her children. She has also been working with our Early Childhood and Family Development program to ensure her youngest is prepared for kindergarten and is on track developmentally.
Alyssa is always open to any suggestions that she receives to help herself and her children. She always attends the Parents as Teachers sessions, and even as she is unhoused, she meets with Alissa Patterson in public areas to continue the lessons with her children. As she continues to work with us, we have been helping her advocate for herself and putting her in contact with other community organizations. We look forward to seeing how Alyssa continues to make progress over the next year.
