There are many ways that people get in contact with Tri County Community Action. Some are referred to us by other organizations, hear about us from a friend or family member, or even just walk past our office on Derry Street, in the heart of Allison Hill. That is how Yomarys Cortorreal was able to meet one of our Self-Sufficiency Coordinators, Carolyn Gulley. When Yomarys walked into our office, she did not realize how much Tri County Community Action would support her over the next year and a half.
Yomarys came to us in March 2023, unemployed, without citizenship, and without support from her family. After hearing about her situation, our receptionist was able to put her in contact with Carolyn, and over the next year Carolyn would work with Yomarys to help her become self-sufficient.
Yomarys’ dedication to improving her situation along with Carolyn’s guidance and ability to serve as an advocate for Yomarys was all she needed to start on the path towards self-sufficiency. Within three weeks of working with Carolyn, Yomarys was able to get a part time job working at a local drugstore. Shortly after, she was able to begin renting her own home because of her new income. Her next goal was to get full United States citizenship.
Over the course of a year, Yomarys worked hard to study for the test while learning English at the same time. This goal was not one without obstacles, there were times where she was at risk of losing her ability to apply for citizenship. Whenever these obstacles presented themselves, Carolyn was there to advocate for her and even helped her retain a lawyer to assist her through the citizenship process.
Carolyn’s assistance allowed Yomarys to stay on her path to citizenship and in August 2024 she was able to pass the test, taken in English, to get full citizenship. Yomarys was excited and grateful for all of the support she received through TCCA. As she continues to work with Carolyn, she has not stopped setting goals for herself. The work that Carolyn has done with Yomarys has ignited a passion for helping people as Yomarys hopes to work within Harrisburg to help improve the lives of its community members. Her next goal is to buy her own home and have her daughter and grandchildren move closer to her. Carolyn already has provided her resources and guidance to help achieve these goals. Yomarys’ story is just one of many who stop by our offices every day, looking for someone who is willing to listen and provide guidance when they need it most.
